Das Wahlgrab – ein individuelles Grab
Das traditionelle Grab für Särge und Urnen können die Hinterbliebenen individuell gestalten. Das betrifft sowohl die Gestaltung mit Gedenksteinen und Kreuzen als auch die gärtnerische Pflege. In unterschiedlich großen Gräbern kann daneben auch Platz für mehrere Verstorbene eingeplant werden. Das individuelle Grab wird damit unter Umständen zu einem letzten Ruheplatz für ganze Familien, der über Generationen weitergeführt werden kann. Der Zeitraum, für den ein Nutzungsrecht für ein solches Grab erworben wird, liegt zwischen 20 und 30 Jahren und kann immer wieder verlängert werden.

Das Reihengrab
In einem Reihengrab kann in der Regel nur ein Verstorbener beigesetzt werden. Wie der Name bereits sagt, geht es der Reihe nach, man kann sich keine Grabstelle aussuchen. Das Reihengrab ist normalerweise die preiswertere Alternative zum Wahlgrab. Nach Ablauf der Ruhefrist verfällt die Grabstelle und steht dem Friedhof zur Neubelegung zur Verfügung. Eine Verlängerung des Nutzungsrechtes an einem Reihengrab ist nicht möglich.

Rasengräber
Rasengräber bieten sich beispielsweise an, wenn seitens der Angehörigen die Möglichkeit zur Grabpflege nicht gegeben ist. Bei Rasengräbern übernimmt der Friedhof die Pflege der Grabstelle. Eine Bepflanzung sowie Grablaternen oder Steckvasen sind als Grabschmuck nicht zulässig. Die Ruhezeiten sind wie bei herkömmlichen Erdgräbern in der Regel 20 Jahre. An der Beisetzung können die Angehörigen teilnehmen und den Namen des Verstorbenen auf zentral gelegenen Platten bzw. Stelen eingravieren lassen.

Die Bestattung in einem Kolumbarium
Unter „Kolumbarium“ versteht man seit der Antike Urnenfriedhöfe, bei denen die Urnen der Verstorbenen in kleinen Kammern beigesetzt werden. Das erste städt. Kolumbarium befindet sich auf dem Friedhof Itter. In der Nähe von Düsseldorf bieten zum Beispiel der Waldfriedhof in Monheim, die Kirche „St. Elisabeth“ in Mönchengladbach-Eicken und die „Grabeskirche Liebfrauen“ in Dortmund architektonisch anspruchsvolle Urnenbeisetzungskammern an. Die Trauerfeiern können je nach Möglichkeiten vor Ort unmittelbar vor der Bestattung in dem jeweiligen Kolumbarium bzw. der angeschlossenen Kirche oder in einer Trauerhalle außerhalb des Beisetzungsortes stattfinden.
